Former University of Georgia running back and Heisman trophy winner, Herschel Walker has signed a contract to fight for the MMA, Mixed Martial Arts association and will fight in the heavyweight division. He is presently training in San Jose, California.

Herschel Walker to fight MMA
Herschel Walker was the hardest working and most celebrated running back to ever come out of the UGA bulldogs. Everyone knew Herschel Walker and his accomplishments at Georgia and his training regiment was highly written about. His pro career wasn’t as great but he is definitely one of the greatest college running backs of all time.

He will begin training with American Kickboxing Academy, the high-profile camp in San Jose, Calif., that trains UFC standouts Josh Koscheck, Mike Swick, Jon Fitch, Cain Velasquez and Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson.
This fight really seems like one of those promotional events that the UFC did with Kimbo Slice who was a highly talked about street fighter but tanked in his UFC fight with an unknown fighter. Kimbo Slice was horrible and was simply a ratings contract signing. The UFC is still using his name but he has no respect in true fighting circles. I believe Herschel Walker may be the same way even though he is a TaeKwonDo black belt.
Mixed Martial Arts is so different from football or even just plain TaeKwonDo. A very good friend of mine, Mike Pechina, is a former United States Olympic judo champion who is now a coach at Cahill’s Judo Academy in San Bruno, CA. Many of my friends are fighters and the thing I have learned is that MMA is all about the ground game. If your ground game is tight, you increase your chances. Taekwondo is not a ground game discipline.
Herschel may do good if he improves his ground game considerably and is able to keep up with people who are 22-27 years old while his body is 47 years old. Big difference. I wish him luck, though.
