Social Media Specialist

BAM! You are a social media specialist and expert. Now, how to get paid? This is the ever elusive question. People want to hire you to be a social media specialist but NOT pay you until someone clicks on the link in the Tweet and fills out the form. The promise is that you will get paid $50 for every person who fills out the form. Easy money! Yeah right.

I just read a Craigslist job posting with this as the job. This is a joke, right?! What is a social media specialist? There is NO such thing as this. That’s like saying back in the day that I need a Vibe Chat Specialist or a Black Voices Chat Room specialist! What the hell. Anyone that’s been on the Internet for the last ten years knows there is no specialist in social media. In fact, why is it even called social media?

Social Media and Twitter Specialist Job

Social Media and Twitter Specialist Job

Twitter and Facebook both knows that the chatrooms were once popular and bangin. Black Planet, Black Voices, and the Vibe chat rooms were all social media rooms where people just sat around and talked smack all day while at work. They could never monetize these and pretty much all of them failed. So, to me, a Twitter specialist is someone that sits at their desk tweeting about the sun shine all day or talking about social events. Do you really need to be a specialist?

In fact, my true argument is that social media is only crazy popular due to the unemployment rate. If everyone was back at work circa 1999 there would be no Twitter in the form that it is today. They would exist but Twitter and Facebook would not be so popular because people would be at the job instead of at the house. With record numbers of people unemployed and getting their Comcast Cable TV shut off, why not log on to Twitter and talk all day? That’s what truly makes a social media expert.

So, here’s the qualifications as I see it: 1). unemployed. 2). unemployed with nothing to do. 3). watch TV and have the laptop in front of you so you can have ideas to Tweet about. 4). Link your Twitter to your Facebook so you don’t have to say it twice. 5). Watch all Reality shows and Tweet about them and gain followers. 6). Watch the news and ESPN and Tweet about everything the announcers say.

BAM! You are a social media specialist and expert. Now, how to get paid? This is the ever elusive question. People want to hire you to be a social media specialist but NOT pay you until someone clicks on the link in the Tweet and fills out the form. The promise is that you will get paid $50 for every person who fills out the form. Easy money! Yeah right.

SKECHERS

If you have 200 followers and you send out a Tweet you can expect roughly 2 people to click on it. You are fighting a number of factors happening on Twitter. Out of your 200 people at any given time, only 20 may even be online at the time of your tweet. Out of the 20 people that see your tweet, you will be extremely lucky if you get 2 of them to click on it and you will be super lucky if they fill out the form. What to do? Use Twitter to promote the mess out of your own company or just talk to your friends. If anything, set up yourself to make money and not give it to some other person who claims they will make you money. Brand YOU first while you’re on Twitter.

USC Running Back Stafon Johnson Out of Surgery

With 275 pounds crashing down on Stafon Johnson, I know it is a miracle that this young running back is alive. I pray that he is able to resume his football and college career. The doctor has said that he is uncertain if Stafon will be able to speak again. Prayers to Stafon and his fam.

Stafon Johnson is out of surgery and in stable condition following a weight lifting accident on Tuesday September 28, 2009. Stafon was flat bench pressing 275 pounds and the bar slipped out of hand and landed on his neck. The doctor said if he weren’t so muscular it would have possibly killed him.

USC Running Back Stafon Johnson

USC Running Back Stafon Johnson

This is a freak accident and I can’t understand how it would have happened with a spotter. I see dudes at the gym all the time pushing the flat bench press and doing over 225 pounds. When I was younger I also loved the flat bench and it really served as a man indicator for all of us football types. Whoever pushed up the most on the bench press, was usually the strongest guy in school. Spotters should always be used pushing any type of heavyweight. I do see people at my gym near Georgia Tech going at the flat bench without spotters and this really heightens the need for a good spotter who is really there watching you.

I spot people on the flat bench by being fully present and keeping my hands on the bar itself in the event of a slippage or if they can’t get it. Some dudes have told me that they don’t like that type of spot out of ego but it allows me to be in control of the bar if they lose it. And, I must admit, that I’m always spotting someone who’s flat benching well over 225 pounds and this is no little bit of weight. One time while spotting a linebacker who was pushing up 315 pounds, he lost energy and couldn’t push the weight on his last rep. Just to get that bar back up and rack it was an enormous feat.

With 275 pounds crashing down on Stafon Johnson, I know it is a miracle that this young running back is alive. I pray that he is able to resume his football and college career. The doctor has said that he is uncertain if Stafon will be able to speak again. Prayers to Stafon and his fam.

Paying To Go To Work

If you go to work, you should be getting paid not paying to go to work. Does anyone agree with this mentality? Teenagers need jobs not paying the company to stay in business.

Share

Hmmmm…Just talked to a teenager about going to work. She was happy and said she got a job working for a product company. The only catch is that she has to pay them $70 to start working. I’m not quite sure I believe in a job where the kid has to pay the company. After all, that’s $70 in income for the product company. They make off like a bandit because they promised a kid a job and end up making money off the kid.

I look at this very skeptically and don’t think I actually believe in this. If you go to work, you should be getting paid not paying to go to work. Does anyone agree with this mentality? Teenagers need jobs not paying the company to stay in business.

Jon Gosselin Latest Reality Star Casualty

If it weren’t for Nene Leakes’ craziness on Real Housewives of Atlanta, nobody would watch. The craziest thing is that messiness and craziness wins in the world of reality and the people who author craziness and messiness are usually ladies.

Proving my theory that WOMEN love gossip and are the creators of true epic drama, TLC just gave this Jon Gosselin dude the boot. Speaking at length to my cousin, we came up with the theory that women cause drama and women are the ones who actually boost all television reality series ratings.

If it weren’t for Nene Leakes’ craziness on Real Housewives of Atlanta, nobody would watch. The craziest thing is that messiness and craziness wins in the world of reality and the people who author craziness and messiness are usually ladies.

It did not surprise me that Jon Gosselin got the ax. He’s a dude. Us dudes don’t give a crap about reality and what it’s like to have 8 kids. Women love that. I guess his ex Kate is somewhat messy too and she will be maintained to just Kate Plus 8! Jon doesn’t give enough drama. Reality TV proves that it loves coonery and buffoonery in order to stay interesting. If you are not a buffoon, you will not enjoy success and not stay in the public eye.

Jon seems like he would prefer watching a good game of football and watching Notre Dame march down the field anyway. Who wants to sit at home tending to 8 kids every single day. I saw him say he didn’t go anywhere for about 8 years in that relationship with his ex wife and just stayed at the house. Bruh, go get some beers, go grab a date, and have some fun. Of course take care of the kids but please get off the reality TV circuit and enjoy your life before it’s WAY past late.

How To Become The Best

Becoming the best whatever you choose in your life has everything to do with constant action and effort. No one person has a lock on being the best. Mary J. Blige may be the best R&B singer. P. Diddy may be the best urban clothing designer. Why? How? Why is Lil Wayne the best rapper alive? How did they do it? How did they get there?

There is no secret to being the best. There is no magic wand. I knew Puffy when he had a black and white business card with a little baby boy on it. I met him at the Gavin Convention and he was just starting out. He just kept going at it. This is your key to becoming the best you. Find out your passion and then just stay at it until it starts to pay. The key is doing it until you start to see financial results. Unless you’re not in it for money. But, if you’re in it to make money, keep after it every single day.

Do not wait until some magical condition or some magical moment to start being the best you. I heard someone say that they were waiting until all things were perfect and until things started popping off to get going. This is ignorant. There is no thing to wait for. Websites are free now on WordPress. You don’t need a ton of money to get cracking. You need passion, energy, commitment, and work effort to become the best.

Aim high and shoot straight and keep doing your thing every single day. Even do it 7 times per day if you can. The key in being the best lies within you. Only you will determine how high and how far you can go. And remember, you can be down and behind in the count and still hit the ball out of the park.

How To Bounce Back When You're Flat Broke

being broke is a mind set. Instead of believing that you’re broke, you should instead believe that you have a cash flow situation. Cash flow situations can be improved.

Share

My friend Dan and I used to always say that being broke is a mind set. Instead of believing that you’re broke, you should instead believe that you have a cash flow situation. Cash flow situations can be improved. Being broke cannot be improved because it’s a mental condition. So, how do you go from having a cash flow situation to improving it?

Being Broke is No Joke

Being Broke is No Joke

There is no real easy answer for this especially in this economy. I believe it’s a combination of things that help you to bounce back in poor cash flow situations. The first thing that you must do is believe that you can rebuild or build to improve your cash flow. The second thing that you can do is acquire new skills that help you improve cash flow but keeps money in your pocket. In other words, don’t believe the commercials that come on TV saying that you can make tons of money medical coding.
Converse (Product) RED (180x150)
Before you run to enroll in specialty trade schools, use the job boards like Monster and Career Builder to determine if those types of jobs exist in your city and see how many years experience they require you to have. If the medical coding school is saying that there’s tons of jobs in the city you live in but you go to Monster and see ZERO medical coding jobs, you should not go to the trade school for this. You might be wasting your time.

I do recommend learning technical things like html coding, advanced html and XML coding, and tools like Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server. I don’t think everyone should become a programmer and all of that stuff but all the people that I know that make a ton of money in software taught themselves. They did NOT go get a certification. Neither did I. I learned Oracle and SQL Server by downloading the software on my computer and using the online lessons to set up scenarios to teach myself. This keeps me with job skills even in a down economy.

You have to look at this cash flow situation from a macro level and not a micro level. In other words, this is a broad brush and is happening all over so your plan needs to be strategic and not based upon you having to turn around money tomorrow. Yes, you probably need cash tomorrow, but look at the long term and make your decisions based upon that. The biggest key to changing your cash flow situation truly lies in what you know. Most jobs will be some sort of technical job in the next 10-20 years. You must be online, understand basic html, and hopefully start to understand XML in some capacity.

If that’s too much, learn Microsoft Excel and become a master at Excel. I know corporations who use Excel to build full fledge applications. Again, you don’t have to become an engineer, just have to know something technical on the computer. Hit me if you need ideas.

Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds lady dies of Lupus

I used to date (well sort of) this sistah in Atlanta with Lupus. I met her at Starbucks in the city. We were both writing books and would break out the laptops and write all day at Starbucks. She was tall, beautiful, chocolate, and very sexy. I used to sit right next to her and we actually didn’t speak much.

First of all, very few cats in the urban community even know this Beatles song. I know I’m going to get the onesies and twosies who say they are avid Beatles fans but for the MOST part, people do not know what and who wrote and sang this song. The biggest news is that the lady that the Beatles wrote this song about died of Lupus. What is Lupus? I called 5 people today and no one could give me a definitive answer.

Beautiful Black Woman

Beautiful Black Woman

I used to date (well sort of) this sistah in Atlanta with Lupus. I met her at Starbucks in the city. We were both writing books and would break out the laptops and write all day at Starbucks. She was tall, beautiful, chocolate, and very sexy. I used to sit right next to her and we actually didn’t speak much. She was WAY into her laptop and writing and since I was there for that purpose too, I would just say hi, set up the Apple Powerbook, and go order a fat free Hazelnut mocha. I don’t drink these anymore since it’s like eating a Big Mac and Fries and horrible for the diet.

Anyway, Ms. Mysterious was beautiful. Perfect skin. Perfect teeth. Perfect body. I was secretly in love with Ms. Mysterious but I couldn’t let her know. We would be at Starbucks from 7 a.m. to around 1 p.m. every single day for about two weeks until one day I said “Hey, would you like to go get some lunch down the street?” Ms. Mysterious agreed and I was excited. I told her we would go to Zocalo’s down on 10th and grab a giant margarita and some awesome lunch. As we walked in the Starbucks parking lot to my car she said she wanted to drop her laptop off in her truck. I said “cool, no worries”.

As we walk to her truck, I see she has a handicap sticker in the truck and so I joke with her and say “that’s just like some folks to get a handicap sticker just so that they can park upfront at Starbucks or the grocery store.” She giggles, throws her laptop in her truck, covers it up so no one would be tempted to break her windows out and grab the laptop, and we jump in my car. Ms. Mysterious loved to dress. Was always dressed gorgeous and always looking beautiful. I never saw a day when she was dressed “frumpy” or in some sweats. She literally looked like she was on the cover of Essence Magazine or a Dark and Lovely Hair Care Product display. Bangin!

As we pull into the parking lot, park, and order our margarita’s, I have to ask her why in the world does an educated, beautiful, strong black woman have a handicap parking placard in her truck. She looks at me dead in the eye and says she has Lupus. I was floored and asked her if she was serious. She said yes and showed me the proof. Turns out that Lupus is an autoimmune disease in the body where the body can’t tell the difference between harmful substances and healthy substances. The body starts to eat itself and starts to eat muscle and erode tissue. When attacks come, it can be extremely painful and make you not want to move at all. Lupus can be deadly for African Americans. It affects nine times as many women as men.

Derrion Albert – Lessons Learned

The key to staying alive and protecting ya neck as a black kid is to know when to fight and know when to run. The key is knowing when to run and not letting pride and ego overcome you. Kids will never put down weapons in the ‘hood.

Share

When I was growing up in a rough neighborhood in Peoria, Illinois, the one thing we learned is to never go around a beefing crowd. The murder of the youngster Derrion Albert is very unfortunate. The one thing about crowds is that they get very hyped unnecessarily. I watched the video on Huffington Post, which I’ve decided to not post here, and he got cold clocked by someone who was literally standing right next to him.

Derrion Albert Killers caught on film

Derrion Albert Killers caught on film

In a crowd, you can’t tell your friends from your enemies. And sometimes you have frienemies around you in a hostile crowd. This is a sad state of affairs to see a young black child die in such a senseless manner. But my mother was right. Keep your kid away from the ‘hood if you want your kid to stay alive. The ‘hood is nothing but negativity and people wildin’ out. I pray for Derrion Alberts family in this difficult time but word to black youth: stay away from the crowd and when a fight breaks out, down run into the tornado; run away from it.

I know this is difficult especially when you see your friends caught up in the tornado but these crowds always get onlookers who you don’t know. In Oakland, I saw a huge riot one day near Castlemont High School. The crowd had built up a frenzy and you couldn’t tell which side which kids were on. I decided to NOT jump into the crowd and help because I couldn’t tell friend from foe. I encourage all black kids to stay out of the fray. When the crowd becomes an angry mob, head in the other direction even if you believe it’s braver to head into the storm.

The key to staying alive and protecting ya neck as a black kid is to know when to fight and know when to run. The key is knowing when to run and not letting pride and ego overcome you. Kids will never put down weapons in the ‘hood. It’s too dangerous and most people believe they need to protect themselves. So, I stayed alive by knowing how to stay away from the ‘hood and stay away from senseless mobs. Prayers to the Derrion Albert family and friends who have to deal with this.

Mortgage Crisis Turns Deadly for California Family

They found out that they were in arrears at a rate of $4,000 per month according to Bank of America. The bank sent them a letter stating that unless they pay in full, they will be foreclosed on. This comes at a time when their son is in desperate need of the heart and kidney transplant. To worry about losing their home during this difficult time is enough to drive anyone crazy.

Share

Sunday, September 27, 2009 was a beautiful sun drenched day in Northern California. It was 98 degrees. No clouds in the sky. A breeze whipping off of the Bay. Couldn’t possibly get any better than that. I pick up a newspaper that I would normally throw in the trash and open it up to read what’s inside. I start reading a story about a Bay Area California family whose son requires both a kidney transplant and a heart transplant. But the real news was that Bank of America wants them to pay their mortgage or get out of their house.

The story is the same all over. Bank of America receives billions of dollars in help from the United States and turns around and forces the consumer to pay or get out of their home even if they legitimately cannot pay. This should be considered a crime in America. The big corporation wins and extorts the consumer like a pimp does to a prostitute. There is literally no difference at all.

Elizabeth and Mark Tanner live in Brentwood, California. They are the proud parents of 4 kids. Their youngest son, Aaron Tanner at the age of 4, requires both a heart transplant and a kidney transplant. Bank of America could care less. Like the rest of America, the Tanner’s have had difficulties paying a high mortgage payment based upon a valuation of their home from years ago when Bay Area home values averaged over $600,000.

Aaron Tanner requires a heart and kidney transplant

Aaron Tanner requires a heart and kidney transplant

Mark and Elizabeth Tanner had the mortgage reduced to a payment that they could afford while battling through their sons illness. But what they didn’t factor in was the property taxes that are now in arrears in an amount that exceeds $20,000. Bank of America says that the couple must pay them or get foreclosed on. What a bank! They really love their customers!

When the Tanners first got their mortgage re-modified last year through Bank of America, their property taxes were not factored into the monthly payment. Many customers have their property taxes put into an escrow account and paid every month with the mortgage. But because the initial mortgage payments were rolled into the initial loan re-modification and not due for six months, the Tanners were unaware of the situation and continued to pay the re-modified mortgage amount of $2,900.
