My friend recently told me about a job she was applying for that required a Bachelor’s Degree to be an Administrative Assistant. Answering phones at the front desk and assisting clients when they come in has now climbed to an all time high.

Why on this earth do you need a Bachelor’s Degree or MBA to answer someone’s phone? Because corporations are finding ways to weed people out and have excuses to keep the number of resumes and applicants down. What to do? Create your own opportunity and answer your own phone.

The writing is on the wall. Corporate America is bleeding jobs and they are background checking and eliminating people left and right for the silliest issues. Another associate of mine had been working at Bank of America for 7 years. She got laid off in February of 2009 and recently got re-hired for a much lower salary. Due to the economy, she acquiesced and took the job only to find out 4 days later that something came up on her background check from 1990 and BofA terminated her for this.

There’s really no need or place for anger. We can get mad for a day or two and hold resentment which I have done myself, however, this resentment does not move me forward. We can hang our heads or wake up and figure out the next way to make money.

There is no easy solution to this but you must build a new business and a new way of making money. Corporations are not the answer for African Americans. Corporations are going to find workers way over on another continent to do the work that we can easily do here in the United States. The time to act is now. Build your business today. I would not wait.

The message is painfully obvious. If you do not figure out how to make your own money, especially as African Americans, you are doomed to let these corporations control you. African Americans Need To Create Their Own Way
