Last night, I was watching First 48 on television which is a show that highlights murders and violent crime in America and then shows the first 48 hours following the violent crime and the cops and detectives charged with trying to find out the details of the crime. I never watch this show and can’t stand the violence seen in the African American community in these shows, however, I just happened to watch last night with Troy Davis’ execution fresh on my mind and the minds of the American public.
On the show, I saw young black brotha’s killing one another in cold blood execution style and it made me think about my real opinion on the death penalty. Was I against the death penalty or was I simply for saving Troy Davis from being executed because of the details of the Troy Davis case? I had to truly gut check this and think about it. When I saw young cats murder an innocent African American family man who had a loving wife and 2 little daughters, I quickly changed my stance on the death penalty.
I no longer felt as passionately about the death penalty as I did on the day that Troy Davis was set to be executed. Troy Davis’ story was a little different to me but was it really different to the officer who got killed and his family? The bottom line is that someone got shot and killed just like I watched on First 48. I can honestly say that seeing murder like that makes me re-think my stance on this capital punishment issue in America and it really makes you almost want the people who commit these type of murders to die as well.
I saw some young cat kill his entire family and then beg for mercy and forgiveness and plead for his life because he was scared of being put to death. What! How can this cat be scared for his life yet take the life of his aunt, her son, and her 12 year old daughter? Why is he scared? And, the real question for me personally is, why should his life be spared? I know it’s a question of ethics but it’s a tough question. It’s a question I think should be weighed on a case by case basis.
