I became familiar with Gil Scott-Heron in 1993 while at The Upper Room in San Francisco. The Upper Room was founded and run by Rafiq Bilal, my friend Mohammed Bilal’s father. The Upper Room was a family of artist, poets, writers, black thinkers, creative folks, dancers, etc. People would recite Gil Scott-Heron and I believe he even came through The Upper Room at one point. Gil Scott-Heron was one of the greatest poets of our time. Rest in Love!

Is your fraternity or sorority ready to be crowned the next Sprite Step Off champion? If so, get your best moves working because Sprite Step Off is back and better than ever.

The tournament-style competition returns with a six-city tour kicking off on March 19 in Charlotte, N.C. with teams from across the country competing for two $100,000 grand prizes in scholarships. Regional event competitions also will take place in Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Houston, with the winning teams advancing to the national championship in Washington D.C. on May 21.

This 2011 Sprite Step Off officially kicked-off with an online application submission which began Feb. 10 and concluded on March 13. Interested fraternities and sororities entered the competition by submitting a short performance video that showcased their step talents and highlighted their positive contributions to their community. Sprite Step Off breaks the mold of traditional step competitions by creating a platform that focuses on scholarship, education and community service.

“Sprite Step Off gives college students an outlet to showcase creative self-expression through the art of step while promoting the importance of higher education and being active,” said Augusto Elias, Sprite Brand director, Coca-Cola North America. “Sprite sees stepping as a vehicle to empower this innovative generation to spark their creativity and fresh thinking while giving back to the community.”

Sprite will enlist the National Step Show Alliance to oversee and manage the scoring and judging during all phases of the competition. The selected teams will compete at venues in cities nationwide, including:

* Charlotte, N.C. – March 19
* New York, N.Y. – March 26
* Atlanta, Ga. – April 2
* Los Angeles, Calif. – April 9
* Houston, Texas – April 16
* Chicago, Ill. – April 30

The first place fraternity and sorority winners from each regional event will receive travel to the championship event in Washington D.C. on May 21. The event will feature the top 12 teams – six fraternities and six sororities – as they compete to see who will bring home the Sprite Step Off II crown. Tickets for the regional events are $20 and are available at www.spritestepoff.com.

DJ Rock-T from the “Rickey Smiley Morning Show” will be the official MC of the Regional and National Championship events, and DJ Mr. Quick will perform on the turntables alongside appearances by local celebrities and guest musical performances to be announced.

Community service will once again be an important part of the competition. Each participating step team will participate in service activity at a local Boys & Girls Club in each host city. Sprite will also present each participating Boys & Girls Club with a $4,500 check and book donations. The Boys & Girls Clubs participating include:

* Charlotte, NC – The Salvation Army Belmont Boys & Girls Club
* New York, NY – Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club
* Atlanta, GA – Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta
* Los Angeles, CA – Challengers Boys & Girls Club
* Houston, TX – Boys & Girls Club of Greater Houston
* Chicago, IL – Boys & Girls Club of Chicago

“We’re so grateful to Sprite for making Boys & Girls Clubs such an integral part of the Step Off Competition,” said Frank Sanchez, Vice President, Sports, Entertainment & Alumni Relations for Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “Our Club members need inspiration from high achievers like these step competitors to graduate from high school with a plan for their future.”

Supporting community service initiatives has been a core element of the National Pan-Hellenic Council’s nine organizations since their founding. These organizations include: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

“Stepping has a uniquely positive impact on the college experience of our youth and we commend Sprite for its continued commitment to the National Pan-Hellenic Council and for partnering with the Greek community to build the art form in the right way,” said Jennifer M. Jones, NPHC National President. “Sprite is showcasing the art of step and the creativity of our students to a national audience. The program’s emphasis on service to our local communities is particularly important, with much needed outreach that promotes the benefits of physical fitness and education to the next generation of students.”

Background on College Greek Stepping

College Greek “Stepping” is a mix of foot movements, handclaps and voice chants performed by historically African-American Greek letter organizations. This form of self-expression has transcended African-American Greek letter organizations and is now shared by many multicultural fraternities and sororities, including both Hispanic and Asian groups. Sprite created the tournament to celebrate the uniqueness and manifestation of stepping and to recognize the leadership, service, loyalty and perseverance that make the multicultural college Greek system a source of empowerment.

Should you get your Executive MBA?

When I was in California, in the mid 1990′s, I was smitten by pursuing my doctorate and becoming Dr. Spinks. I had this in my mind primarily because of the teaching of Marcus Garvey and seeing him in his robe all the time.

Share

This is a tough question and a personal question for black america. On one hand, I’m all for an Executive MBA program especially at a University like Georgia Tech, Stanford, Cal, Rutgers, etc. Getting your MBA positions you for upper management at large global corporations such as Apple, The Home Depot, Ford, and other large United States global conglomerates. Unlike our white counterparts who decide to pursue the MBA or a PhD, is that for black men and women, the decision is to pursue being lonely and one of a handful if any at the corporate level of black people.

When I was in California, in the mid 1990′s, I was smitten by pursuing my doctorate and becoming Dr. Spinks. I had this in my mind primarily because of the teaching of Marcus Garvey and seeing him in his robe all the time. So, I got ready. I went to the College of Alameda where the math program is top notch and rivals that of the University of California Berkeley in an attempt to get me ready for going to Cal and getting accepted into the program there. I held many meetings with Ms. Antoinette Torres at Cal who was the Minority Engineering Student Association counselor who helped guide me down this path.

The road is long and narrow and extremely lonely. I ended up not pursuing it fully because Ms. Torres asked me two pertinent questions that I couldn’t answer as an entrepreneur: 1). Do I see myself at a company like Hewlett Packard doing research and being the only black person around in the research division of HP and 2). Do I want to become tenured and a teacher at Cal or make a bunch of money in the technology sector in the Silicon Valley? As an entrepreneur, it was tough to answer those but I had to make a choice. If I was going to sit alone in a corporation I wanted to make a suitcase full of money from technology and not be a long term teacher. I loved the idea of having my MBA and PhD but I wanted to make money and have a company more than I wanted that.

That’s why I say it is VERY personal and it is up to you to decide should you pursue the MBA. If anything, it puts you into a great circle of people that you can leverage from in the future as you grow.

Gerard Spinks Leadership Academy: Many People Will Quit

Trust when I say that slow and steady wins the race. Because the road is paved with rough spots, you must go slow.

Share

This really almost goes without saying but I’m going to say it anyway. Take whatever you’re doing. If it is a tough road, the chances are 8 out of 10 people will stop driving on that road. Literally, visualize a bumpy and rocky road full of hairpin turns, potholes, and crevices. Most success literally is paved like this. If you’re driving on this crazy ass road, nearly everyone will make a turn to get off of it and try the easy route.

It’s human nature. When it gets tough, rocky, slippery, wet, cold, bumpy, cloudy, and not perfect conditions, people want no part of it. If it takes a long time to complete, most people will quit. Most people consider one or two years too long to do something. Where does this leave you if you are in the 1 or 2 people who will stay on the road? It leaves you in an awesome position to capitalize on success. If you simply go slower on the bumpy road, you will survive it and make it. You just have to slow down and no one wants to do that.

Trust when I say that slow and steady wins the race. Because the road is paved with rough spots, you must go slow. When you finish, expect that you will be the only one but do not let this make you over confident or under confident and angry and mad that no one else is there to share it. Your mission is yours. Go do it.
