I became familiar with Gil Scott-Heron in 1993 while at The Upper Room in San Francisco. The Upper Room was founded and run by Rafiq Bilal, my friend Mohammed Bilal’s father. The Upper Room was a family of artist, poets, writers, black thinkers, creative folks, dancers, etc. People would recite Gil Scott-Heron and I believe he even came through The Upper Room at one point. Gil Scott-Heron was one of the greatest poets of our time. Rest in Love!

I was reading my Facebook friend Goldie Taylor’s wall the other day which inspired this post. Goldie Taylor is a MS NBC correspondent, writer with multiple books on the market, and overall motivator. Goldie was born and raised in East St. Louis, Illinois and she was thanking God and remembering where she came from and how far she has come. Her words inspired this post.

Goldie proves that it doesn’t matter where you’ve come from to “make it” in the world. It does not matter if you live in New York – the center of the universe to some – or if you are born and raised in East St. Louis, Illinois or like me from Peoria, Illinois. What matters is the dream that lies within your heart. The trick to making it from small town America into the big leagues lies in the action that you perform each and every week to move this dream from lying dormant in your heart to actualization.

Even though Goldie Taylor may be from East St. Louis where it is somewhat rough and tumble, she dreamed and did. She writes everyday and always believed that she could make it. She did not do as some do and think that the only way to make it is to be in New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles. Yes, some industries demand you to be there but most dreams are not those of acting, dance, and film. The point is to do something today to move toward your dream. Do not think you are somewhat limited because you happen to be in a small town or from a side of the city that is less desirable.

Dr. Maya Angelou Receives Honorary Degree from The University of Redlands California

-Dr. Maya Angelou, the celebrated author, poet, educator and activist, became the newest graduate of the University of Redlands when she was presented with an honorary degree after speaking to a packed Memorial Chapel Wednesday night.

At the end of her fourth visit to the University, President James R. Appleton and Academic Affairs Vice President David Fite bestowed upon Angelou the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

The recent Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient bowed her head, and after several moments replied:

“Family. That’s who you are to me.”

In poetry, song and story, Angelou entertained and moved the enthusiastic crowd that gave her several standing ovations.

“I come to help tear down the walls of ignorance,” she said. “This University, this Redlands… is a rainbow in the clouds,” offering a “chance to let the walls come tumbling down.”

“It was built for that. Supported and founded for that. You are here because you are supposed to learn that,” she said.

Angelou told the Redlands audience she had to postpone her invitation to speak because she was selected to receive the Medal of Freedom—the nation’s highest civilian honor—from President Barack Obama in February.

She held the medal up to the audience, telling them, “I know this represents seeing the walls coming tumbling down. If you see me wearing it on TV, know that I’m wearing it for you.”

Angelou has authored 12 best-selling books, including “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” an autobiographical account of her youth, and numerous magazine articles that have earned her Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award nominations.

In 1993, Angelou became the second poet in U.S. history to have the honor of writing and reciting original work at a presidential inauguration. Delivering “On the Pulse of Morning” at Bill Clinton’s presidential inauguration gave her wide recognition for which she was awarded a Grammy.

Hailed as one of the great voices of contemporary black literature, Angelou is a lifetime Reynolds professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in North Carolina.

In presenting the honorary degree to Angelou, President Appleton told her, “Your voice and wisdom have reached across generations and around the world to change the lives of many.”

Tyrese Gibson's How To Get Out of Your Own Way Book in Stores Soon

Hollywood star surmounts a rocky childhood to redirect his own fate.

Gibson was raised in South Central Los Angeles by an alcoholic mother and a line of her abusive boyfriends, but he learned early on that if he was going to amount to anything, he needed to be proactive. So he hustled; he begged for money; he looted during the Rodney King riots. As a teenager, his high-school music teacher drove him to a shot-in-the-dark audition that landed Gibson a spot in a 1995 Coca-Cola commercial.

Fast forward 15 years, and now the actor, songwriter and Grammy Award–winning singer challenges readers to get off their “pity potty” and rise above their surroundings, too. Using a mix of self evaluation, deep faith in God, focus and determination, Gibson sets forth the path he believes saved his career and his life.

While he credits many factors and individuals (including Will Smith) with his transformation, the author was obviously born with wisdom many others aren’t fortunate enough to possess—the knowledge to recognize that he could and wanted to be more, and the inner strength to make it happen. Gibson also offers more than 50 pages of relationship advice (including sex, parenting and infidelity), which he claims may set female readers’ teeth on edge—a likely outcome.

Part memoir, part life manual, an uplifting and inspirational guide to regaining control of your life.

Lil Wayne Confirmed To Perform On Saturday Night Live

Lil Wayne will kick off the countdown to the release of THA CARTER IV, due out in early 2011, by performing “6 Foot 7 Foot,” produced by Bangladesh, on NBC’s Saturday Night Live on December 18

Cash Money/Universal Motown Grammy-winning, multi-platinum hip-hop icon Lil Wayne has announced that “6 Foot 7 Foot,” the first single from his forthcoming album, THA CARTER IV, was released to radio and available at iTunes on December 15, 2010. Lil Wayne will kick off the countdown to the release of THA CARTER IV, due out in early 2011, by performing “6 Foot 7 Foot,” produced by Bangladesh, on NBC’s Saturday Night Live on December 18, followed by New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly on December 31.

THA CARTER IV is the hotly awaited follow-up to Lil Wayne’s ninth album, 2010’s I Am Not A Human Being. Propelled by the hit single “Right Above It,” featuring Drake, which is quickly approaching platinum certification, I Am Not A Human Being soared to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, in addition to topping Billboard’s Digital Albums chart, Rap Albums chart, and R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

The close of 2010 finds Lil Wayne capping off an outstanding decade that included selling more than 10 million records and earning eight Grammy nominations for his multi-platinum 2008 album, Tha Carter III, which shattered records by selling over one million copies in its first week of release. The New Orleans native who hails from the rough streets of Hollygrove is a veteran artist who released his first tracks at age 12 after he was introduced to Cash Money CEOs Ronald “Slim” Williams and Bryan “Birdman” Williams. He released the first installment of Tha Carter series in 2004, which added to his platinum plaques, followed by Tha Carter II in 2006, which further solidified Lil Wayne’s status as one of the best MCs in the hip hop game. But it was 2008’s critically acclaimed Tha Carter III that gave Lil Wayne his iconic stature in popular music, paving the way for his advisory role to grow as CEO of Young Money Records.
