I was looking the other day at my client’s Career website that lists all of their job openings. My client is huge and the number one retailer in the world. Even in this recession, they have jobs but I decided to take a much closer look at what type of jobs at the corporate headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. The company has 326 job openings of which 200 or more of them are technical jobs. Hmmm. We have a conundrum here. How does one get a job in a recession if one is NOT technical?
For 2011, that question is simply played out. My 8 year old daughter knows this iMac that I’m working on right now very well. She’s technical. No one in America should be sitting around non technical and especially black people in America. And yes, I know the reality is that there are many people sitting around the world and in the United States of America who are non technical but STOP IT! No excuses for 2011. You MUST become technically proficient and take the entire year working towards that goal. And believe me, I even have challenges to stay completely technical and in front of the technology curve with my specific niche.
Staying technical and really knowing how to do technical stuff will keep you in a job and make your resume standout. This is how I’ve been able to survive this great depression because my skills are in demand and I am highly technical and so is my company. Getting technical takes awareness and a distinct plan of action to do so. I wrote about this in a related post which you can see about how to get a job in 2011.
Do not let yourself become obsolete on American soil. Don’t let your kids become obsolete on American soil. You must stop this American corporate methodology of going to get workers from other countries because we as Americans increase our knowledge base and our learning at all times. Never stop learning and never give up on learning something technical.
