I read something that was inviting me to some social media conversations which made me think about this subject and write about it. Think about going to a family reunion. You’re outside at the park going fro picnic table to picnic table. Do you like all the conversation that’s going on at each picnic table? No, you don’t and this is just like social media.
If you’re trying to build something, you’re not going to hang around the picnic table at the family reunion listening to the latest updates on The Real Housewives of Atlanta. That’s boring to you. You’d rather start and define your own conversation and build something for the future, right? This is exactly what Twitter is like. If you’re just talking without providing a link to lead someone to your site to further your brand, you’re just talking and the conversation is meaningless.
If you are into building something to help improve your situation, talking for talking sake is worthless. I would do it just a little bit but not focus on it 100%. You must talk while providing a link for people to go to your website and build your brand.

Exactly one year ago in December of 2009, I had a great conversation with the world famous Abiola Abrams about how to build our respective brands on the Internet. Abiola Abrams is the consummate brand builder and I respect how she builds and controls her brand on the web and on television. So, last year at this very time, I set some goals for my blog site and decided to get serious about it.
Because I’m deep into marketing and integration, I set a goal of having 250,000 people read and visit my website. Honestly, in December of 2009, I had no idea how to do this and thought this was a lofty goal to achieve. If I were to pay for that, it would cost me over $250,000 to implement that type of plan and get those type of visitors to my website. Since my days as a quarterback from high school to college, I’ve always had VERY lofty goals to where no one could really relate and thought I was crazy. I love seeing people’s faces when I achieve the lofty goal that they thought was beyond my reach.
When Abiola Abrams and I chatted about the goal, we decided that nothing was beyond us and that we, respectively for our brands, would set out to become the number one brand on the Internet. Lofty goals is an understatement to where I truly think. I have one SECRET weapon that people don’t know and that most people don’t speak about when they get to the top on the Internet. My SECRET weapon is that I’m a writer. I have three self published books on the market. The Internet and top ranking is about words. The more words you have on the Internet and on your website, the more traffic you will get because the Google robot constantly has to come to your site and index all of those words.
As a writer, I hold the key. I kept writing all year. I kept posting original content and not content that other people had on their websites. Most people are lazy or are not writers and simply need to copy other people’s original content. I did not have to do this. I write. I really write. Today, I have jumped over 20,000,000 registered websites in the world. The UndagroundMilli is now ranked one of the top 300,000 websites world wide. The average person doesn’t understand this but if you are into traffic and into building a brand, you understand the importance of this. The moral of the story? Keep writing and keep blogging original content if you want to build a brand on the Internet.

Your blog should be fully automated so that you work smarter not harder. You should post once and let it push to all other social media outlets that you have. You should never be thinking about “whoa” did I send this to my facebook? It should happen automated so that you just focus on content only. Here’s how.
You post on whatever platform you write in. You then set it up to feed to Twitter automatically via TwitterFeed. TwitterFeed is free. You set it up on a timed interval to automatically post new postings that you write. Post once and walk away.
To post to Facebook, you log into facebook, go to Applications, click Notes. In Notes, click on Import Blog. Facebook only allows one blog per Facebook account but set your one blog up to feed to facebook. Then go to LinkedIn. In your LinkedIn account search applications for an application called BlogLink. BlogLink will allow you to import your blog into LinkedIn.
So, you should post on WordPress or Blogger and without doing a thing, your blog will go to Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter to increase your viral marketing. Good luck. Need help? Hit me on Twitter.

People talk about social media all the time like it’s the best thing in the world. It can be if utilized right. For those of us who have been around the block with technology and have seen the dot com implosion first hand, you know not to get too excited about the next coming of the Internet Age. Having said that, you can be successful with social media. When I talk to people I tell them that it’s not about aimless talking on Twitter and not about constant business promotion on Twitter or Facebook.
There must be a balance and you must walk a tight rope between engaging with people since most people like to just chat away about anything and selling your business or your product. It’s good to talk personal and it’s good to talk business only. You must find that line. I feel that the line is where you draw it in the sand. I’ve had some friends say that they are only on Facebook and Twitter for personal reasons and just to chat with people in their inner circle. I’ve also spoken to people who want to maximize it and use these platforms for business connections.
We’ve all been inundated with the myriad of party flyers that now dominate Facebook. I’ve recently turned these off and only post business stuff to my wall. My fans see it on my Facebook fan page and choose whether or not they wish to read it. Find the balance but don’t ever do too much of one side. Don’t talk about your dog and your mother all day and don’t talk about your music all day. Do both, but have a strategic plan as to why you are even social.
