I notice that NASCAR is trying to make an attempt to lure the African American audience and even more women viewers to their stable but will it work? No, it will not. We, African Americans at large, relate to sports that we see in our neighborhoods growing up. Black kids and mainly boys such as myself, play three sports in this order: basketball, football, and baseball.
Typically, extreme sports such as motor sports and sports like hockey take huge sums of money to partake in. This one fact excludes us from doing it. The other factor is that NASCAR is really a sport that men who tinker and play around with muscle cars do with their boys. Many of us didn’t have fathers first of all and to see someone tinkering around under the hood of a sports car is extremely rare.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that all African Americans cannot relate to NASCAR, however, the majority of people will never become glued to a television to watch NASCAR nor ever go to a NASCAR event where you will encounter a sea of white American and some redneck audiences who fly confederate flags at the events.
I truly believe NASCAR should stop trying to reach our market and continue to focus only on their core audience. Yes, some people would then get mad and want them to focus on our African American market but they really do not need to do so.
