Black Youth is in a state of emergency. More than ever, African Americans are being pushed out of jobs, homes, and corporations quicker than everyone else.

Yes, the rest of America is going through a purging of the entire economy but we are affected disproportionately because we are the first to get fired and last to get hired. To combat this, we need to instill certain things in our youth so that they will not have to deal with this in their generation.

Kids need to have mathematics instilled in them early on. The main determining factor in most education will be math. Math sciences such as Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, and Calculus should be taught at the high school level and built upon as a foundation at the elementary school level.

But black parents listen up: do not rely on your childs school to do this. Depending upon where they are at, they might not even care about math. You as the parent must care about math and make sure your kid does not get into high school and struggle with math classes.

If your kid scores high on the math SAT, they can write their ticket into universities such as Cal Berkeley, Stanford, Duke, Vanderbilt, Princeton, etc. Nothing is a panacea, however, give our kids a chance at success by instilling mathematics into them as important as they watch BET’s 106 and Park and know the video countdown line up each day.

Math now. Calculus now. Algebra now. Help them. If you don’t know how, it doesn’t matter. Just become the enforcer and sit with them while they do it.

First of all, I need to commend all students who are in college. Thank you for your hard work, long study hours, and dedication to improving your life. The one thing that helped me to succeed in college in my junior year was working with my counselor to develop a strategic plan for when I got out of college.

My plans at first were to play football in the National Football League. The feedback from my coaches and league scouts was that I was neither big enough nor fast enough to go to the next level. While this seriously hurt my feelings, I had a counselor who helped me pick myself up mentally and create a plan.

She knew I was smart as I was taking computer courses. She asked me what did I want to do. I didn’t really know but I knew that I really liked developing computer programs in lab. It was challenging and fun to see the computer say things on the screen and take input. I loved it. She then told me that she felt I would do well if I studied and highly focused on computer science and get a job in the Silicon Valley in California.

My first question was how much money does this type of job make. She then showed me a salary guide showing that top engineers can make in excess of $100,000 per year. Say no more, I was focused. You must develop a strategy before you start taking classes. You must come up with a plan and most importantly find out exactly what makes you want to wake up at 7:30 a.m., roll out of bed, and head to an 8 a.m. class.

Find that, and you find your future success. I haven’t truly “worked” at a job in a very long time because I really love developing software and do not see it as a job. I haven’t watched a clock in years because I love what I do. Find this in college and you will fly high forever.
