Why Do Music Artist Interviewers Ask The Same Questions?

I believe artist interviewers should invest more time to know an artist and truly find out what makes them tick.

I was just listening to satellite radio and hearing a radio station personality ask Trey Songz about his influences and it prompted me to think about this question that has been asked to artists for what seems like 50 years. I used to see the interviewers on Soul Train ask this same question about 15 years ago. It goes like this: “What music do you listen to? Who are your influences in music?” Can’t someone think of a new question to an artist?

I mean seriously. Who cares about who they listen to or are influenced by. The entire human race is influenced by music. What difference does it make if someone is influenced by Michael Jackson, or Tito Jackson or Soul II Soul? I was influenced by the rock group Journey and Don’t Stop Believin’ which propelled me to run and help me push through and keep fighting forward. But who cares about that? What kind of detail does that provide to my audience that they know this?

I believe artist interviewers should invest more time to know an artist and truly find out what makes them tick. Most times artists are not influenced by music itself but a life changing event in their lives and music was just something used to get through life as an outlet. I truly wish radio personalities would dive deeper and find out more. This is why I began my Beyond The Bling Radio program. I wanted to find out deeper stuff and get out of surface discussion with artists and movers and shakers. Artists are much deeper than people think because they are simply human beings.

The UndagroundMilli serves up stuff that you would never think of and urban content that makes you say “dayum, I haven’t heard about that or seen that before.” I’d like to thank all of my readers of this entertaining blog. I started it in 2009 as simply a labor of love. As a writer, I wanted a vehicle to express myself and my books “How To Be Rich, Nigga”, and “The Baller’s Guide To Major Figure$”. After I wrote these two books several years ago, I wanted to launch a pocket sized magazine in Atlanta for the urban community (whatever that means).

I wanted it to be the size of my books. A magazine that you could throw in your back pocket and carry it around with you. I brought together models, photographers, a street team, and went after local advertisers in Atlanta. Tough job and so I abandoned it before it sucked all the money out of my bank account. I also then turned it into a blog about 4 years ago on the blogspot domain. Boring and didn’t last. I had more spam on it than actual viewers and readers.

So, in the midst of some things going on in 2008 and 2009, I decided to pick it up again. I did a bunch of research on blogs and creating new sites mainly as a vehicle for this magazine. My vision was now an online magazine that you would put in your virtual pocket and always have with you. That is what the undagroundmilli is now. This year alone, it has exploded in growth and I have over 103,000 readers of my blog posts this year alone. I now expect to be at over 300,000 by the end of the year.

I thank every single one of you for reading and coming to the UndagroundMilli site. It challenges me to always provide compelling and entertaining content. You move me to be better and always present something of value to my reader. Thanks for pushing me to the next level. Always the best for YOU, my readers!
