Can Romeo and his brother truly revive No Limit Records?

Well, as my readership knows, I was there during the original building of No Limit Records in Oakland and Richmond, California. But, this is not about me or Master P. The question is can Romeo and his brother – Master P’s twin – CB Valentino revive No Limit Records? I mean 75 Million records sold is a tall order to fill.

The New No Limit Revival

The New No Limit Revival

Well, as my readership knows, I was there during the original building of No Limit Records in Oakland and Richmond, California. But, this is not about me or Master P. The question is can Romeo and his brother – Master P’s twin – CB Valentino revive No Limit Records? I mean 75 Million records sold is a tall order to fill.

The one thing that they will need is the passion that Master P had for music. He was focused and committed to music first and did anything it took to get his music and the music of others out to the market in the Bay Area. But what does that mean for his kids pictured above who want to relive the glory years of No Limit Records? It means much more than just recording in the studio and producing music.

It means truly handling the business side of the music that takes tireless energy dealing with all of the bullshit that the music industry has as a way to do business. It means building the value of the brand back up and creating a demand in the marketplace for the music again. What P did back then in the Bay Area was leave the area and go fill a void in the South at that time. The sacrifice was enormous and his kids will have to sacrifice big and not rely on dads’ money to get them by.

I think the greatest challenge will be getting over the money factor. P didn’t have money to fall back on so the margin of error was greater then. Now, if they make mistakes, they have the money behind them. Sometimes this is a good thing. Sometimes it’s a bad thing. It can make you not work as hard. It’s going to come down to desire. If they want it bad enough and at all costs, they can do it.

How To Be Rich, Nicca – The Come Up – Part Deuce

I would meet Master P, JT the Bigga Figga, E-40, Rappin 4-Tay, Coco Quick, and a lot of cats who would go down to Phunky Phat to get their CD cover art work

I would hire Underwood Works to do all of my graphics and go there almost 2-3 times per week to proof the work that they would do. I would pay for my designs out of my paycheck from my job that I had working in downtown Oakland, CAon 22nd and Webster at Shared Medical Systems. When I would show up at Underwood Works, which would eventually become known as Phunky Phat Graph-X, I would meet niggas that would be trying to do the same thing as me and be independent and push their music out to the world.

I would meet Master P, JT the Bigga Figga, E-40, Rappin 4-Tay, Coco Quick, and a lot of cats who would go down to Phunky Phat to get their CD cover art work, posters, and other graphics work done by Phunky Phat Graph-X. I would go on to see first hand the work that was taken to build and grow No Limit Records that the world now knows today as earning and grossing over $250 Million dollars.

When we were all coming up though, nobody even dreamed of being able to make it up as high as No Limit has. Master P was struggling to get things together just as we all were. He was living up in Richmond, CA which is a crazy environment and even the record store that he had up there was in the cut. He and I also sold music to Ts Waiuzi Record Store in East Oakland near Eastmont Mall. Again, no one knew that people would blow up the way some folks did. The point is that everyone was striving and driving to move ahead regardless of their situation. We didn’t care if we didn’t have the
money or the banks wouldn’t loan us any cash to move our company’s ahead. We didn’t care if we didn’t have enough money to get the thing looking excellent from day one.

P rounded up his brothers and launched The Real Untouchables after a bullshit deal with Jason Blaine over at InaMinute Records up in Emeryville, CA. I knew Jason Blaine from a
function that Lachlan McIntyre, owner of 4080 Magazine threw in Berkeley. Lachlan was also trying to come up and created a hip-hop magazine that focused on hard core West Coast Hip Hop.

Lessons Learned From Master P

Fast forward to right now. Master P aka Percy Miller was right.

I used to live in East Oakland, California and Master P used to come to my house for barbecues and discuss music. One day, while eating some Everett and Jones Barbecue Percy Miller tells me “G, you’ve got to give people what they want and not what you want.” This was interesting and so we kept talking about this.

At the time, he was providing music to people primarily in Oakland and Richmond. I asked him why he was doing music that talked about crazy stuff, murder, and mayhem. He said once again that he gives the people what they want and not the type of music that he wants to give them. At the time, he had not signed the deal with Priority Records and was still grinding. He was not a multi-millionaire saying this. He only dreamed of the future. He dreamed of how it could be but he felt that was the key to the music market at the time.

Fast forward to right now. Master P aka Percy Miller was right. In The UndagroundMilli blog, I realize that “feeding” people what I want actually gets no love. I know it’s crazy but it’s true. If I tell a story about determination and persistence, I get roughly 5 web visitors. If I publish a story about something ridiculous and slightly negative in nature, I get hundreds of clicks. I fully agree that the key to wealth and business growth is understanding and reading the market. The key is seeing what the market wants and then cater your offering to the market. This involves intense study, measurement, testing, and analysis of key market trends. It involves knowing what’s hot right now and blending your company into what’s hot in order to find web consumers and traffic.

It’s not easy and there is a science to it. You must understand this science and find out what the market wants from you and then sell them that in a way that it doesn’t hurt your company or image. Need help? Get started today with us right here, right now.
