Brett Favre Teaches Us To Keep Believing

Brett Favre has done a wonderful thing for America. He epitomizes success, comebacks and working through adversity when no one believes in you anymore. I love this story of triumph because Brett proved that you can defy age or any negative thing that humans put on you.

People always typically can only see what is in front of them. Most humans can never see what’s inside your heart. Favre proves that with true heart you can do anything and achieve anything within reason. You just have to know your own limits, your own capabilities, your own strengths, and most importantly, your own weaknesses. This is what we should all learn from Brett Favre in this victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Yes, he can still play. Yes, he could do it again. No, he doesn’t live up to any one else’s limits placed upon him. Neither do I. Neither should you.

Is The Hiring of Pete Carroll as Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Racist?

I had an interesting discussion last night with a passionate NFL insider. I had an interesting discussion last night with a passionate NFL insider. His rub on USC Head Coach Pete Carroll being hired as the Seattle Seahawks head coach with full control is that it is racist to not enact the Rooney Rule and interview an African-American candidate.

From Wikipedia “The Rooney Rule, established in 2003,[1] requires National Football League teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operations opportunities. The rule is named for Dan Rooney, the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the chairman of the league’s diversity committee, and indirectly the Rooney family in general, due to the Steelers’ long history of giving African Americans opportunities to serve in team leadership roles. It is often cited as an example of affirmative action.”

As an African American male and football head as well as former quarterback, you would think I agree, however, if I were coaching in the NFL I would not even want to be considered for the Seahawks coaching role just because they DID already hand him the job and rightfully so. Jim Mora Jr. did horrible and was ousted after one season. Pete Carroll has proven team building and team architecting skills. He’s a proven leader with an unmatched pedigree. If I were the owner, I would hand him the job too and not even consider anyone else.

The only thing I think is that there should always be a backup in case Coach Carroll doesn’t jump ship in which case you should enact the Rooney Rule and interview African American coaching candidates as well as all qualified candidates.

The NFL (Not For Long) is filled with the carcasses of coaches who tried and failed. I believe that we should be given the opportunity just like anyone else but make sure you are crazy ready to lead that type of bipolar up and down lifestyle where everyone and their mother is judging your every step.

Successful Route Running In The NFL

Successful pass routes are a combination of reads between the quarterback and the receiver. The quarterback reads the defense and the receiver has two or potentially three option routes to run based upon what the defense gives at the line of scrimmage. The NFL is about changes and the most successful quarterbacks and receivers are fully in sync with the routes. When interceptions are thrown, it’s usually because the quarterback thought the receiver was running a certain “hot” route and the receiver thought the quarterback was throwing to another hot route destination.

Peyton Manning is a master of reading hot routes

Chiefs Running Back Larry Johnson Suspended for Tweets

Proving that social media networks can get you fired if you don’t watch what you say, the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs running back, Larry Johnson, has been suspended by the team for tweeting gay slurs and negative comments about his coaching staff. Proving that social media networks can get you fired if you don’t watch what you say, the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs running back, Larry Johnson, has been suspended by the team for tweeting gay slurs and negative comments about his coaching staff. For some strange reason that I cannot understand, people mistakenly believe that Twitter is somehow a closed network and that they are sharing information privately between friends. Epic fail.

What’s the lesson? Stop sharing stuff that would make your employers embarrassed, angry, and get you a one way ticket to the unemployment line. Twitter and Facebook are NOT private networks and you are speaking in a public place. Please start believing it.

NFL Football Business

The best coaches and quarterbacks know that you never look at a football field as 100 yards. Football is about incremental progress and steps. Teams that will succeed in 2009-2010 take the field and look at it in 4 yard increments. Success comes in gaining 4 yards consistently play after play, down after down. Take [...]
