Six Months In A Leaking Boat?

To blame your family and friends for their misfortune means you’re a pure idiot.

Money, Power, Good Health by Gerard Spinks

I see people talking real GIGANTIC on Twitter about how they are mad because they had to help someone with cash, or help a friend in need, or how they went and spent a ton of money on some Patron at a club in Atlanta or LA. The funny thing is that most people talk from a position of strength until their own boat starts leaking and has a small hole in it that turns into a big hole.

Most of us feel coochy crunch with our jobs and income and don’t sweat it until we are confronted with a sudden layoff, downsizing, jobs moved to India, or just plain out of work and realize that you can’t get on unemployment for whatever reason. It’s so easy to roll tough when you have a job or income and start bashing everyone who doesn’t because they asked you for $20. Rule 1: Shut the hell up! Rule 2: can you survive in the middle of the ocean for six months with a leaking boat? In other words, if you got laid off right now, today, and due to some glitch in the matrix you cannot get unemployment, can you survive and pay all of your overhead for six straight months until hopefully you get a job?

Come on big talker! I’m talking to you now. You have now become the person that you were just complaining about. But, there’s a real NOT perceived solution to this. It used to be prudent to save 3 months worth of your overhead in a Fidelity Investments Money Market Account. Not anymore. I have personal friends who have been laid off from American super corporations and haven’t had a job in 16 months. They tried everything and went through 3 cycles of unemployment. So, when you have the job, keep expenses low and stack chips like the end of the world is near.

If you’re total monthly expenses are $2,000, you need to do whatever it takes to save at least $12,000 to survive for 6 months during the time the boat is leaking. If you can’t save money, you need to do whatever it takes to reduce your expenses to save. America is NOT out in the clear yet. To blame your family and friends for their misfortune means you’re a pure idiot. It just might happen to you. Save your money and idiot proof your own self.

How To Be Rich, Nigga by Gerard D. Spinks

How To Be Rich, Nigga by Gerard D. Spinks

In my book, this chapter is called “Creating Your Plan” but I changed it for the blog. Traditional wisdom and Harvard MBA types will tell you that you have to create a huge business plan full of market analysis, sales strategy, funding plan, and all of this type of nonsense. I’m here to tell you that I have personally witnessed corporations in the Silicon Valley secure $30 Million worth of business funding with a two page business plan and a couple of Microsoft Powerpoint Presentations.

I used to think that I needed elaborate business plans and then go to a bank and show them my great business plan with all of my research done and they would certainly give me the funds to start my business since I’m able to convince them how big the growth is in my industry.

This will not work. This type of planning is for people who are well connected with family and friends with money and who have family members who are bankers, accountants, lawyers, and investors to move the funding package through when others say no. It doesn’t apply to us black folks. Your plan needs to be no longer than 3 pages. It needs to simply identify your goal and your overall objective. It then needs to detail in those three pages how you are going to begin and sell your product or service to your core audience.

In order to get bank financing, the bank needs to see that you have the ability to sell your product or service to customers in at least 24 consecutive months before they even dream of giving you money. White people have a much easier time with this though in America. For black people, we need to hustle this ourselves. Not saying it can’t be done, but you must rely on self for the first 24 days and prove that there is a market for what you sell by selling it. This is why I say that it is a complete waste of time to do a comprehensive business plan with full market research until you’ve at least done a proof of concept on your stuff.

Never Let Them See Your Stress – Think To Win

Come across as positive, uplifting, and ready to tackle any responsibility

I’ve been speaking with several people that are going through MASSIVE turmoil at home or at the job. The key is to never let an interviewer or even associates know what’s happening at the house. People do not want to hire or be involved with anyone who may come across as a problem. I have a friend who always says “I’m going to be a problem”. This is ill talk of themselves and I don’t recommend that someone keeps saying that about themselves. Yes, the job market is ridiculously tough but don’t internalize it and turn yourself into a stress ball. When the opportunity knocks, you can’t let out to the world how stressed you are or that you are losing your house and marriage.

Come across as positive, uplifting, and ready to tackle any responsibility, big or small and you will win. Keep positive to keep it moving.

If your best isn’t quite good enough for your boss or someone in your family, I seriously suggest you start to do for yourself. You see, you’ll never quite measure up to someone else’s standards of you. However, you will measure up to standards that you create for yourself provided they are realistic.

And the best thing about it is that you can critique yourself and not hear someone else’s critique of you. Start your own project, be your own boss, dance to the beat of your own drum. Only then will you know and appreciate true freedom.

You Are What You Say You Are

People always wonder why I call myself the Underground Millionaire. They always want to know if I have one million dollars in cash sitting at my home.

People always wonder why I call myself the Underground Millionaire. They always want to know if I have one million dollars in cash sitting at my home. I say this and I mean it: you are exactly who you say you are and act as you are. In other words, if you say you’re a millionaire but your actions are those of a criminal, you will never ever be a millionaire. Not for long any way.

If you say you are the best writer in the world, and put forth action to be the best writer in the world, you will become the best writer in the world. You must act with conviction and your action must match your intention.

You cannot intend to be something and act completely opposite of your intention and hope to succeed. Many people fail with that simple sentence and fact alone. You must not only say it and claim it. You must act it out every single day in order to achieve your dreams. Keep pushing and driving and you will make it.

This morning I went to Mt. Diablo in Northern California for a mountain hike. This is very important in understanding and dealing with this recession. In the mountains you realize that we are not in control of nature and circumstances.

You quickly see that you need to be mentally, physically, and emotionally strong to deal with big hills and inclines as well as long periods of not seeing anyone on your path. It teaches and reinforces humility and courage to stick it out until you finish.

I encourage you to stay strong in this most difficult of times but know that these hills can be climbed successfully.

Spinks Better Stronger Faster

Growing up in Peoria, Illinois, I played quarterback in high school behind New York Yankee skipper Joe Girardi and learned some of life’s greatest business lessons as a kid. I don’t know if it was fate or not but even our names were similar: Joe Girardi and Gerard Spinks.

Both of us went to high school in Peoria, Illinois at The Academy of Our Lady/Spalding Institute, a private catholic high school in downtown Peoria. I grew up in a single mother household, Joe Girardi grew up across the Illinois River in East Peoria, Illinois. I had heard a lot about Joe Girardi in baseball because he excelled in little league and was considered one of the best catchers in the little league circuit in the Peoria area.

I met Joe Girardi my freshman year of high school when being a quarterback was nothing but a dream and a wish. I had already watched him play his freshman football year and watched him play baseball at Bradley Park which I would walk to with my big brother, Jeronimo Spinx. What struck me about this kid was that he was very smart and extremely nice. He was strong as an ox, open minded, and willing to help me learn everything about sports. I met him during summer conditioning down at the high school where our coaches ran us and got us into top football condition to prepare for the upcoming football season.

Playing quarterback was awkward at my high school where 98% of the student body was white. My family and I were some of a handful of black kids that went to the school and even the coaches were really against having a black quarterback. Joe Girardi was different. He was hard working. He was meticulous in his approach. His parents instilled both academics as the focal point and sports as the secondary mission in his life. He put God first and exemplified that in his young life. The summer leading into my sophomore year, Joe asked me what my goals were. I said that I wanted to become a starter on the sophomore team and play varsity football as a sophomore and one day beat him out as a starter.

As a black kid, seeing a leader work extremely hard, play hard, and strive for the top colleges thoroughly changed my life and let me into the secret of business. Joe Girardi taught me to throw the football 500 times per day with no excuses. The secret was in the work. Work hard and confidence would naturally come. Refine your craft every single day without fail. When discouragement comes and people talk about you, keep your head down and keep working hard. Most importantly, he never focused on money. He focused on being the best he could be.

Joe Girardi taught me balance and excellence even at a young age before anyone knew what he would become. He taught me leadership is in what you do not what you say. He taught me business excellence lies in doing something everyday until you become an expert at it and block everyone else out. He taught me that business success lies in your ability to play ball literally and metaphorically.

Time To Create Your Very Own Reality

People are often times mistaken to believe that they are arrested by circumstance and that they have no control over what happens to them in their lives.

Spinks Better Stronger Faster
People are often times mistaken to believe that they are arrested by circumstance and that they have no control over what happens to them in their lives. Not to go all spiritual on my readership but this is the furthest thing from the truth.

Your world consists of what you believe about yourself in your mind. It does NOT consist of what others believe about you, good or bad. It’s what you believe that matters and is where your mind combined with action will take you. If you believe that you can become a millionaire and you firmly believe this in your mind, your body will push to make this happen every day.

Conversely, if you believe that you are poor and broke and have terrible relationships, this is exactly what your mind will manifest for you over time. Your actions are driven strictly by the mind’s eye or what we refer to in Ausar Auset as the 3rd eye. It is not driven by outward appearances to the outer physical eye.

If you want 2010 to truly change for you, and I mean truly, you must begin to believe that you can change it for yourself. There is no job that will change it. You must step out on belief and create your own change for yourself. During the original Great Depression in 1929, the people that lasted were those who learned to create their own reality. The other folks become poor, destitute, and without any hope.

You can do it. You can change yourself. Start with action, today. Whatever you do, whatever you say, watch what you say to yourself each and every day. These are the most important words for you achieving and living in your own true glory.
