Why USC Quarterback Matt Barkley Should Stay

At this point in Matt Barkley’s growth and development as a quarterback, I believe he is better than where Matt Leinart was even as a senior.

Apr. 01, 2010 - Los Angeles, CA, USA - 01 April 2010: Head coach Lane Kiffin talks with Matt Barkley during a USC spring football practice at the Howard Jones/Brian Kennedy Football Practice Field on the campus of USC in Los Angeles, CA.

I believe that Matt Barkley, Quarterback of The University of Southern California, should stay put and not bail on USC despite their NCAA sanctions and not being able to go to a bowl game. Why? Being at USC will NOT hurt Matt in any way. In fact, if USC wins the conference it will be a complete slap in the face to the NCAA.

Also, Matt is still young and a true sophomore this season. Last year, he played so well that he looked like a pro prospect as a true freshman. As a USC Trojan, his pedigree is still at the top and the coaching staff and level of play will still allow him to make it to the NFL as long as he doesn’t get hurt – obviously.

At this point in Matt Barkley’s growth and development as a quarterback, I believe he is better than where Matt Leinart was even as a senior. Matt Barkley is one of those guys who I believe is a true phenom and a highly gifted quarterback. Yes, the NCAA has weighed against the University of Southern California Trojans but this political mess will not hinder Matt Barkley in any way as he climbs his way into stardom and becomes a complete quarterback.

Breaking Sporting News: USC Trojans banned from bowl competition.

The University of Southern California has received a two-year bowl ban and a sharp loss of football scholarships in a report on the NCAA’s four-year investigation of the school.

The NCAA cited USC for a lack of institutional control Thursday in its long-awaited report, which detailed numerous violations primarily involving Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Reggie Bush and men’s basketball player O.J. Mayo.

It seems as if Pete Carroll left for a real reason and jumped ship from USC. The team is banned from bowl competition for the next two years.

USC QB Matt Barkley Lifts Trojans Above Boston College Eagles

Well, in another blog post of mine about this kid Matt Barkley of USC, I spoke of how I felt he was the best and most ready NFL QB as a true freshman at USC. He proved it last night in the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco’s ATT Park by lifting USC over Boston College 24-13. I evaluate talent at Nike Combines for college so I see many quarterbacks at an elite level. This kid has always impressed me since he was at Mater Dei in Southern California. I’ve seen talent at Concord DeLaSalle and at some elite high school football programs in Texas as well including L.D. Bell High School, Trinity High School, and Plano High. This kid stood above in my mind out of seeing quarterbacks at all of these programs.

Matt Barkley QB of USC

Yes, USC took a hit and started losing some games at the end of the season, however, Matt Barkley is pro football ready and will do well in the NFL in about 3 years provided he stays healthy. To show that type of poise in big games at 18 or 19 years of age is super incredible. And just for the record, I am NOT a USC fan. In fact, my friend was a tailback at USC and we went to the Cal Berkeley game together and I was NOT fond of USC fans at that game at all. Just for the record.

Despite USC having a downturn to their season, freshman quarterback Matt Barkley has shown signs of being a pro style quarterback even at 18 years young. If he were a junior or senior, he could easily be in the conversation of the NFL top 5 quarterback picks in the 2010 NFL Draft.

As an evaluator of quarterback at NFL combines, I rate this kid extremely high and put him up there with Terrell Pryor, Jimmy Clausen, and Sam Bradford in terms of talent. He stands tall in the pocket. He is poised. He is confident and most of all, he makes the right decisions at the right time and can check off receivers and read defenses very well at such a young age.

This is very tough to do at the USC level and the style of offense that they play. I rate Matt Barkley with 5 stars for talent and readiness.
